The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's move to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The police took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
