Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
